Chill out and have a fun filling all the spaces of this pumpkin with patterns! Enjoy Autumn! Watch me make mine on youtube! https://youtu.be/rbdCEXMl59UAs Halloween approaches, I see more and more Day of the Dead themed decorations and I feel like its really important to acknowledge this because although the skull and skeleton themed decorations are interesting and colorful, they also have a deep cultural significance in Mexican heritage. Please consider learning a little bit about the Day of the Dead. The following links can provide with more information about this 400 year old tradition.
http://www.art-is-fun.com/day-of-the-dead-facts/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Day_of_the_Dead http://www.dayofthedead.com/ This year my 5th. Grade and 2nd. Grade students will be creating some Day of Dead themed art projects. The 5th. Graders are making ceramic skulls that they decorated with texture and color. If the students wish to have their skull finished as a magnet they can bring 25 cents to school. I will make sure a heavy duty magnet is securely glued to the back of their skull. The magnet is entirely optional. The 2nd. Grade students are working on colorful skull drawings. Pictures of the finished projects will be posted on my Facebook page. Please consider following me so you can see the latest happenings. https://www.facebook.com/friendlyneighborhoodartteacher Guess what?! Over the summer I got married! It was a small, lovely wedding in our home and I really wanted it to be special. So, I decided to follow the Japanese tradition of folding 1,000 cranes. An ancient Japanese legend promises that anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes will be granted a wish by a crane. I don't know if the legend is true, but I wished for a wonderful and wedding and it truly was. Folding the cranes was a really wonderful experience. Every night as I folded the cranes, I had time to think and reflect and it ended up being very peaceful. Plus, the cranes on strings looked fabulous! Check out the tabs on the left to see pictures of my cranes and have a sneak peek at some of my wedding photos. When I started folding the cranes, my son, Dominic, told me about a wonderful book he read in school. It was about a young girl who attempted to fold a 1,000 cranes. It's a touching and inspiring story and I really don't want to give away any spoilers! I bought a copy of the book and donated it to my school library. I told my students if they check the book and read it they should tell me and I will ask them a secret question. If they know the answer to my secret question I will give them a prize and fold them a crane! I was so inspired by making the cranes, I knew I have to share with some of my students. During the first week of school I shared my crane story with my third, fourth and fifth grade students and taught them a few fun origami shapes. The kids LOVED it. I added and origami playlist to my youtube channel so you can see what the kids were working on and maybe try yourself.

This is always a hectic time of year in the art room. Just when the hustle and bustle of report cards and conferences passes, it's on to art show season! The Festival of Fine Arts is one of my favorite things because I get to showcase the hard work of my talented students and I get to see what other art teachers have been doing with their students. Also, I love being able to support the music and band programs by watching all the great performances. I hope you will join us on April 11th at Beach Park Middle School. It's a lovely way to spend time with your family and support the community. In the next week, please check the 2015 Festival of Fine Arts tab on the left of this page to get the most up to date information about the event.
