I love to introduce my students to the art of Piet Mondrian early in the year because that's when I first start chatting about primary colors. Primary colors are a set of colors that can be combined to make a useful range of colors. Red, Blue and Yellow are considered primary colors. (Ask your kids if they know that!) Piet Mondrian features Primary colors in some of his Paintings. Once the kids have looked at the painting and our discussion is over I have them recreate Mondrian's style using pre-cut squares of primary color paper and glue. Of course we listen to boogie woogie style music while we work.
